Bikeability Partnership Brings Tyre Safety Into UK Cycle Lessons.

TyreSafe has partnered with Bikeability, the government-backed national cycle training programme, to give young cyclists practical tyre safety skills from the outset. The collaboration adds simple pre-ride checks to school and community training and introduces a dedicated online resource for families. The aim is to build lifelong habits that reduce avoidable incidents and create safer future drivers and riders.

What the partnership will deliver

  • Tyre safety checks integrated into Bikeability sessions for schools and community courses.
  • A new TyreSafe hub for children and parents with step-by-step guidance on bicycle tyre care, including pressure, damage, wheel rotation and valve checks.

“This partnership with Bikeability allows us to instil tyre safety awareness at the earliest stages of road use… If we can encourage these simple safety habits now, we’ll help create a generation of cyclists—and future drivers and riders, who take responsibility for their own safety,” said Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair.

“We’re thrilled to be working with TyreSafe to support young people in becoming safe and responsible cyclists… By helping children understand how to check their tyres and why it matters, we’re giving them lifelong skills,” said Aaron Tillyer, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Bikeability.

Mechanical issues, including tyre problems, can contribute to cycling falls and collisions. Early, regular checks help young people spot under-inflation, cuts and debris, loose or misaligned wheels, and missing valve caps—reducing risk and building confidence before every ride. The Bikeability programme already reaches millions of children; adding tyre safety strengthens that foundation.

What’s in the new guidance

Parents and riders are encouraged to add a quick four-point pre-ride routine:

  • Pressure: Squeeze and pump to the sidewall’s stated range.
  • Condition: Look for cuts, embedded objects and excessive wear.
  • Spin/Alignment: Lift and spin wheels to check for wobbles or rubbing.
  • Valves/Sealing: Ensure valves are straight, caps fitted and leaks absent.

Wider industry context

TyreSafe has intensified public education this year, from a redesigned website that clarifies consumer resources to national briefings and awards that spotlight best practice across the trade. These efforts reflect a broader push to keep tyre safety central to road safety outcomes.
