Annual TyreSafe Briefing Showcases Shared Vision for Safer Roads
This year’s TyreSafe Briefing brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders committed to reducing road casualties caused by tyre neglect. Held in June 2025, the event featured input from enforcement bodies, tyre industry leaders, policy advocates, and road safety charities, all converging on a single mission: to eliminate harm linked to illegal or poorly maintained tyres.
Attendees were treated to a day of insight-driven sessions, forward-looking campaigns, and collaborative case studies aimed at translating data and expertise into real-world impact.
Opening with Purpose: A Review of TyreSafe’s Year
The event began with an address from TyreSafe Chair Stuart Lovatt, who reviewed the organisation’s key activities over the past 12 months. Lovatt reaffirmed the importance of regular tyre maintenance, particularly as national data continues to link unsafe tyres to road casualties.
He outlined the day's agenda, which spanned national policy, regional case studies, community engagement, and upcoming awareness campaigns.
Session One: Strategy and Enforcement at the Forefront
The morning session tackled road safety from multiple angles:
- Commander Kyle Gordon presented strategic updates on national roads policing.
- RoSPA shared its broader vision for accident prevention in the UK.
- Jersey’s government outlined its Collision Reduction Plan, offering a model for small jurisdiction leadership.
- A standout contribution came from Morgan Jamison, whose “3 Wise Men. 3 Lessons” message resonated with both industry and enforcement audiences.
- Jamie Hassall addressed the “Missing Link” between tyre safety and transport policy, underscoring the need for more explicit integration in government agendas.
Session Two: Strengthening Safety Through Collaboration
The second session explored how joint working enhances safety outcomes. Highlights included:
- Ruth Purdie OBE's insights on the role of strategic leadership in tyre safety programmes.
- Road Safety GB’s presentation of its national collaborative approach.
- Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the National Fire Chiefs Council shared community-based tyre safety outreach examples.
- Sophie Lyden discussed grassroots initiatives making safety messaging more accessible.
- The importance of managing “grey fleet” risk was addressed by Driving for Better Business and Vandura, pointing to gaps in current fleet safety practices.
Exhibition and Networking: Industry Innovation on Display
During the midday break, delegates were invited to explore exhibitions showcasing the latest technologies and services in tyre and road safety. Sponsors, including Halfords, supported networking efforts that helped build new partnerships and dialogue beyond the scheduled sessions.
Session Three: Looking Ahead to Tyre Safety Month and Youth Engagement
The final session cast a forward view:
- Emma Burley, TyreSafe Communications Lead, previewed Tyre Safety Month 2025, outlining its themes and new resources.
- Tony Crook highlighted how local authorities are embedding tyre checks into broader community safety efforts.
- The National Young Rider Forum shared efforts to reach younger and higher-risk road users.
- Towing safety—a growing concern during peak travel seasons—was addressed by Simon McGrath from the National Caravan Council.
