Halfords Group will join the FTSE 250 Index from 4 August 2026, marking improved investor recognition after a stronger financial year. The development follows growth across its retail and autocentre operations, including the tyre, maintenance and fleet services that now form a substantial part of the group’s wider motoring business.
The FTSE Russell change follows Halfords’ preliminary results for the 53 weeks ending 3 April 2026. On a comparable 52-week basis, group revenue increased 4.8% to £1.76 billion.
Retail like-for-like sales rose 4.1%, while Autocentres, excluding software business Avayler, recorded growth of 5.8%. Underlying profit before tax increased 4.1% to £45.4 million.
Gross margin reached 52.8%, its highest level for a decade, after rising by 210 basis points. The improvement more than offset some inflationary pressure and planned operating investment.
Halfords said the index admission followed “a period of strategic and financial progress”, supported by stronger returns and improvements to its customer proposition.
The promotion has wider relevance because Halfords is no longer primarily a product retailer. Its garage, mobile fitting and fleet operations give the group a significant position in the UK tyre and automotive service market.
Recent investment has included an expanded mobile tyre fitting fleet. Halfords ordered 60 additional Power360-equipped vans after trials recorded fuel savings of more than 30%. The company projected annual carbon dioxide reductions exceeding 1,200 tonnes across a 280-vehicle fleet.
Halfords Commercial Fleet Services has also opened a commercial tyre depot serving Bristol and the South West. The Avonmouth facility supports scheduled and roadside tyre work for trucks, vans and cars.
Digital access to the workshop network has expanded through real-time fleet bookings at 503 Halfords and National Tyres and Autocare centres. The 1link integration allows fleet drivers and booking teams to confirm workshop appointments around the clock.
FTSE 250 membership does not directly change Halfords’ operations. However, inclusion can increase the company’s visibility among institutional investors and investment funds tracking the index.
For tyre suppliers, fleet customers and aftermarket partners, the more important measure will be whether Halfords converts improved financial performance into sustained service capacity, technician development and operational investment.
The group has already opened a dedicated apprentice training academy in Dunstable. Its first cohort began practical training during 2026 as workshop recruitment and skills availability remained important concerns across the aftermarket.
Halfords said its focus remained on improving its customer proposition and creating sustainable long-term shareholder value. The FTSE 250 entry provides recognition of recent progress, while placing further attention on delivery during the next financial year.
