Michelin’s X Works Z2 and D2 construction tyres are now available as an original equipment specification on selected MAN TGS trucks and tippers in the UK. The 315/80 R22.5 steer and drive tyres are designed for construction vehicles combining road journeys with demanding site operation.
The new OE availability gives MAN Truck & Bus UK customers the option to specify Michelin X Works Z2 steer and X Works D2 drive tyres when ordering a selection of TGS construction vehicles.
Michelin positions the range for trucks that need to cope with mixed operating conditions, including relatively short road journeys followed by work on construction sites and other off-road surfaces. This makes rolling resistance relevant alongside the durability and traction requirements normally associated with construction tyres.
According to Michelin, the X Works Z2 in 315/80 R22.5 is the first steer tyre intended for both road and construction-site use to achieve a B rating for fuel efficiency and rolling resistance.
The manufacturer also claims mileage improvements over the previous generation of up to 10% on the steer axle and 25% on the drive axle. Those figures are based on a Michelin internal study using a simulation tool at its Ladoux research and technology centre in 2024, rather than independent testing.
Both tyres incorporate reinforced sidewall protection, carry the 3PMSF marking and are retreadable. Michelin also lists them as suitable for electric vehicles.
The tyres have a 158/150 load index. Michelin says this provides an additional 500kg of load capacity compared with the previous model when the tyres are fitted as singles on the relevant axle.
Michelin uses a combination of casing, bead and compound technologies, including Powercoil, Duracoil, Opticoil and Carbion, which it says are designed to balance durability, tyre weight, mileage and rolling resistance.
Andrew French, B2B Sales Director for Michelin UK and Ireland, said the MAN availability would allow construction customers to specify the tyres when ordering new vehicles, with Michelin positioning improved fuel economy, durability and operating costs among the benefits of the range.
The X Works Z2 and D2 tyres were also demonstrated during MAN Truck & Bus UK’s recent off-road event at Tixover Quarry, where more than 300 customers attended.
