A closer look at Drivesafe's puncture protection gel.

Drivesafe tyre sealant is gaining attention for its proactive approach to puncture protection. Unlike emergency sprays applied after a flat occurs, Drivesafe is a gel-based formula installed in advance, designed to remain active inside the tyre. When a puncture happens, the internal air pressure forces the sealant into the breach, forming a plug that seals it in real time. This pre-emptive method can help keep vehicles on the road and tyres at the correct pressure, especially in remote or high-demand environments.

A gel designed for reliability and balance

One of the key features of Drivesafe's sealant is its gel consistency. Unlike many liquid-based products, this gel is water-based and does not separate or settle over time. That means it stays evenly distributed inside the tyre, preserving wheel balance and avoiding the need for regular re-agitation. The gel's physical stability also helps ensure consistent performance over long periods, supporting a three-year shelf life.

What tyres it suits and what it doesn't

Drivesafe offers formulations suitable for a wide range of tyres, including those fitted to cars, vans, trailers, motorhomes, and motorcycles. Heavier-duty grades are available for agricultural, plant, and military & commercial vehicles. The sealant is safe for use in standard tubeless tyres and is TPMS-compatible, meaning it won't interfere with tyre pressure monitoring systems.

While the sealant can close punctures up to 6mm in passenger tyres and up to 8mm in larger applications, it's not a substitute for structural repair. Tyres that suffer sidewall damage or large breaches still require inspection and appropriate repair or replacement.

Field-tested and proven in extreme conditions

Originally developed in the early 1990s, Drivesafe's sealant has been field-tested across a variety of demanding settings, from desert transport routes to arctic logistics operations. Its use in heavy-duty sectors has led to the development of a specialised PLUS+ version with added elasticity for larger, slower-turning tyres often used in military and plant operations.

How to install and what to expect

Installation is typically done through the valve stem while the tyre rotates, ensuring the gel spreads evenly across the internal surface. Once in place, the sealant remains active most often for the service life of the tyre (subject to damage sustained). Because it is water-soluble, the gel can be rinsed away when the tyre is removed, allowing for proper casing inspection and permanent repair if needed. Users are still advised to check tyre pressure regularly and treat the sealant as a preventative measure rather than a long-term fix.

Supporting safety, sustainability and fleet savings

For fleets, Drivesafe offers potential value in both safety and operational uptime. Reducing the number of roadside puncture incidents can help lower service callouts and extend tyre life (advantageous on PPK contracts). Its water-based, non-toxic formula also supports sustainability goals, as the gel can be fully washed out and disposed of without harmful residues. For tyre professionals, the ability to inspect the casing post-use aligns with retreading best practices and BS AU159 repair standards.

As tyre manufacturers and operators seek smarter ways to reduce downtime and increase safety, preventative solutions like Drivesafe's gel-based sealant are becoming more relevant. Particularly in fleet and off-road sectors, where punctures can be costly and dangerous, the ability to seal small breaches in real time offers both operational and environmental benefits. It also complements broader trends in connected tyre monitoring and sustainable maintenance practices.
