Wrexham-based Maverick Diagnostics has expanded its international reach after launching a specialist Automotive Training Academy, backed by support from Business Wales. The centre is attracting technicians from the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and the USA for advanced vehicle diagnostics training.
Opened in 2022, the Academy delivers hands-on courses covering major brands including Jaguar Land Rover, BMW and Tesla. It has created skilled jobs locally while enabling independent garages to compete with main dealers by offering full aftermarket support for dealer-level diagnostic systems.
Maverick Diagnostics, founded in 2017, identified the need for up-to-date training in fast-evolving vehicle technology, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Research and development included reverse engineering a Tesla to create specialist EV courses, now among the most in-demand programmes.
According to Managing Director Laura Halls, “We work in a very niche field of the aftermarket automotive market, but the demand for our experts’ knowledge is being called on globally. The Academy was an ambitious concept, but with expert support, we were able to build a solid plan that convinced investors of its potential.”
Business Wales adviser Svetlana Ross worked with Maverick Diagnostics to secure £100,000 in funding from the Development Bank of Wales. The investment supported construction of the facility, recruitment, and development of training programmes.
Ross said, “Maverick Diagnostics had already built a global network of customers. By creating a training centre, they unlocked new growth potential and proved that with the right support, Welsh businesses can lead internationally.”
The company has also achieved top-level cyber security accreditation, enabling safe handling of sensitive vehicle data during remote diagnostics. In addition, Maverick has signed the Welsh Government’s Equality and Green Growth Pledges, underlining its sustainability and inclusion commitments.
