McGill's Group Consolidates Entire 625-Vehicle Fleet Under New Michelin Managed Contract

McGill's Group has signed a new long-term tyre management contract with Michelin, covering its entire fleet of approximately 625 coaches and buses across Scotland. The agreement, managed by Michelin's Connected Solutions (CXS) division, consolidates tyre supply and lifecycle management across all vehicle types under a single policy for the first time, ending a split-supply arrangement that had been in place since McGill's acquired First Scotland East in 2022.

The two businesses have worked together for more than 20 years, but the new contract marks a significant expansion in scope.

Tony Williamson, Group CEO at McGill's, said the consolidation was a deliberate operational decision: "Bringing every bus we have on the road under one new management contract simplifies our processes, making things easier when moving vehicles between different routes and operations." For a growing operator running routes across Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, and increasingly across the whole of Scotland, standardising tyre policy across an expanded and mixed fleet carries real logistical and maintenance advantages.

The 151 electric buses in the McGill's fleet will be fitted with MICHELIN X InCity EV Z 275/70 R22.5 tyres, a multi-position product that Michelin says is designed specifically for electric vehicles while remaining compatible with combustion-engine buses. For fleet engineers specifying tyres on dual-fuel or transitioning fleets, that cross-compatibility matters: it reduces the complexity of managing separate product lines as a fleet shifts from diesel to electric over time.

The contract's multi-life tyre policy is where much of the operational and commercial substance sits. Michelin's technicians will regroove worn fitments on site once tread depth reaches 3 to 4mm, extending usable life at the point where rolling resistance is lowest. Once regrooved tyres have fully worn, casings will travel to Michelin's Remix retreading plant in Stoke for a second service life. Michelin states that retreading doubles casing lifespan and supports UK manufacturing capacity. For a fleet operator, the practical implication is deferred replacement cost and a documented chain of custody for end-of-life casings, which increasingly matters for transport operators with sustainability reporting obligations. All remaining worn casings are handled under Michelin's 4R environmental disposal programme.

Williamson cited sustainability as a material factor in the contract decision, not merely a reputational one: "Through this detailed management policy, they help us get the absolute maximum from every tyre, which reduces our impact on the environment." McGill's has grown rapidly in recent years, adding the Loch Lomond Travel tour operation, a private hire division, and a partnership with international coach operator FlixBus to its core bus network, making consistent tyre management across a diverse and expanding fleet increasingly complex to administer independently.

What This Means

For fleet tyre businesses, this contract illustrates how managed services models are gaining ground with larger operators precisely when fleets are growing through acquisition and diversifying their powertrain mix. McGill's is not a unique case: bus and coach operators consolidating under single tyre management agreements after acquisitions is a pattern Michelin's CXS division is clearly positioning to capture.

Operators with mixed diesel and electric fleets should note that the argument for a single managed supplier becomes stronger, not weaker, as fleet complexity increases. The retreading and regrooving policy embedded in this contract also provides a template for operators seeking to formalise end-of-life tyre commitments ahead of tightening sustainability disclosure requirements in the transport sector.
