LKQ Academy has launched the UK aftermarket’s first virtual reality (VR) training programme, giving technicians a new way to upskill in key areas without leaving their workshop. Piloted at Automechanika Birmingham, the initiative creates a fully interactive virtual training centre where garage staff can practise essential tasks on hybrid, EV and ADAS-equipped vehicles.
The new VR modules replicate LKQ’s Tamworth training centre, allowing users to handle tools, move around vehicles, and carry out procedures in a simulated environment. Unlike traditional online courses, the system immerses participants in practical scenarios such as:
By blending real-world workshop practice with digital learning, the approach aims to reduce travel and downtime while maintaining a strong focus on safety-critical disciplines.
This builds on LKQ Academy’s portfolio of more than 300 e-learning courses and 90 in-person training options across 34 UK sites. Recent training demand has centred on EV readiness, reflecting a growing industry need for technicians skilled in emerging technologies.
Lee Chapman, Head of Support and LKQ Academy, said:
“This is next-level learning for the aftermarket. We’ve listened to garages who want practical training but can’t spare the time to leave the workshop. VR lets us bring the training to them, in a way that’s engaging, realistic and genuinely valuable for the business.”
He added that only 2% of UK automotive technicians are currently trained on ADAS-equipped vehicles, highlighting the urgent need for accessible, flexible training solutions.
The headset-based platform will be available as part of LKQ Academy membership packages, with rental and purchase options in development. It will also support existing e-learning content, creating a single hub for virtual and online training.
The VR courses will be piloted in selected workshops during 2025, ahead of a full UK rollout in 2026. Pricing and access details are expected to be confirmed later this year.
LKQ also plans to introduce the programme in other European markets, leveraging the same virtual training environment to ensure consistent quality across borders. This strategy positions the business at the forefront of aftermarket learning technology.
