The Apulia Region has partnered with tyre manufacturer Pirelli to pilot a digital road monitoring system using connected tyre and camera technologies. Set to begin in July 2025, the project combines Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre sensors with vision-based data from Univrses, aiming to map road surface health and signage conditions in real time. The system will support quicker, data-driven road maintenance decisions to improve safety across the region’s transport network.
Under the agreement announced in Bari, the Apulia Region will become the first public authority to implement a road monitoring system that fuses real-time data from tyre-mounted sensors and on-board vehicle cameras. The project uses:
The collected data is transmitted to a cloud platform, where it is processed and presented via digital dashboards for regional use. The first vehicles, supplied by fleet rental provider Ayvens, will be operational in summer 2025.
By integrating these technologies, the project enables continuous, scalable monitoring of road quality, allowing public authorities to plan maintenance proactively. This approach is expected to reduce long-term infrastructure costs while improving traffic safety.
The pilot is part of Pirelli’s broader smart mobility strategy, which includes similar collaborations such as its ongoing partnership with Movyon (Autostrade per l’Italia) for freeway monitoring.
This initiative builds on existing cooperation between Pirelli and the Apulia Region, especially in digital R&D. Pirelli’s Digital Solutions Center (DSC), launched in Bari in 2022, supports tyre development and factory process optimisation through AI and digital systems. The centre collaborates closely with the University of Bari and Politecnico di Bari.
Apulia’s governor, Michele Emiliano, described the agreement as “forward-looking,” praising its safety focus and public-private model. Pirelli’s Marco Tronchetti Provera confirmed that the region remains strategic for the company’s future innovation investments.
The Apulia pilot reflects growing interest in smart infrastructure solutions that combine tyre-based sensing and vehicle connectivity. As Cyber Tyre technology moves beyond vehicle dynamics to infrastructure assessment, it shows how the tyre industry is repositioning itself at the intersection of mobility data and urban planning. This project may pave the way for broader adoption across fleets, municipal road authorities, and private road operators, particularly as governments seek efficient tools to maintain ageing infrastructure.
