Evonik has begun commercial production of Ultrasil eCO at its Adapazarı precipitated silica plant in Turkey after securing ISCC Plus certification for the site. The plant, operated with Egesil Kimya, is Evonik’s first certified silica facility in the EMEA region and expands circular raw material options for tyre and rubber manufacturers.

A certified route for circular silica

The certification allows Evonik to produce Ultrasil eCO using recognised mass balance standards. In practice, this enables certified circular feedstocks to be allocated through the production chain while supporting auditable claims for tyre and rubber customers.

Evonik said Ultrasil eCO provides “verified, auditable circular content” for tyre and rubber applications. Anna Kunze, Global Marketing Director Tire at Evonik’s Smart Effects business line, said the Adapazarı certification strengthens the resilience and sustainability of the company’s global silica network.

Why it matters for tyre makers

Silica remains a key tyre compound ingredient, particularly where manufacturers are trying to balance rolling resistance, wet grip and wear performance. Evonik says its silica and silane system supports tyre tread performance, including wet grip and lower rolling resistance.

The development comes as tyre manufacturers and original equipment customers place more emphasis on renewable, recycled and traceable materials. Tyre News has recently covered Linglong’s 85% sustainable materials concept tyre, which included rice husk ash silica, and JLR and Pirelli’s FSC-certified tyre project, which linked alternative materials with traceability and OE supply.

Adapazarı gains a wider supply role

The Adapazarı operation is part of Egesil Kimya, a joint venture between Evonik and Ege Kimya for precipitated silica production. Evonik’s site information says the facility added 40,000 metric tonnes of annual precipitated silica capacity after a 2019 expansion, strengthening supply to Türkiye, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

That regional position matters because tyre and rubber manufacturers are under pressure to improve material traceability without adding unnecessary supply complexity. ISCC Plus certification is voluntary, but it is widely used to validate sustainability characteristics of alternative feedstocks and offers chain-of-custody options including mass balance.
