Ascenso Tyres is putting fresh capital, engineering resources and distribution behind its move into large radial mining tyres, taking the programme beyond the 27.00R49 manufacturing milestone reached in August. A US$100 million investment and September launch activity in southern Africa now point to a broader attempt to build mining into a substantial new part of its off-highway business.
Ascenso Tyres has committed US$100 million in new capital to develop its all-steel radial mining tyre business, following the production of its first 27.00R49 giant radial at its Panoli plant on 15 August.
The investment is the more recent development. According to Autocar Professional, the capital has been allocated specifically to all-steel radial OTR manufacturing infrastructure, specialist tooling and engineering capability, and is distinct from more than US$100 million previously invested in Ascenso's agriculture, forestry and construction business. The publication reports that Ascenso's development roadmap extends beyond its current 49-inch capability to mining radials up to 63 inches.
That gives the programme a wider commercial context than the production of one larger tyre. Autocar Professional reports that exports currently account for more than 95% of Ascenso's revenue, while agriculture represents around 60–65% of its business and construction a further 25–30%. Ascenso projects that its domestic Indian revenue share could rise to 15–20% by 2030 as the mining radial business develops.
The company has also started building routes to market around the new range. In early September, Ascenso entered the South African mining market through a strategic partnership with Durban-based Royal Tyres, combining Ascenso's OTR portfolio and manufacturing capability with Royal Tyres' local distribution network.
The companies used Electra Mining Africa in Johannesburg, held from 7 to 11 September, to showcase the radial OTR range. Mining Weekly subsequently reported that the partnership is focused on expanding their combined mining and off-highway tyre offering in South Africa.
Ascenso is also adding technical support around the programme. More than 15 field application engineers are being deployed across mining regions in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to monitor operating conditions and tyre behaviour, according to Autocar Professional.
The programme is being developed from an already sizeable manufacturing base. Ascenso currently states annual production capacity at Panoli of between 85,000 and 100,000 tonnes, with a workforce of more than 2,500.
What remains unclear is how quickly the investment will translate into significant mining tyre volumes. Producing a 27.00R49, establishing distribution and deploying field engineers demonstrate that the programme has moved beyond product development, but they do not yet establish commercial scale or proven field performance.
For Ascenso, the September developments therefore matter less as another product launch than as the beginning of a dedicated mining radial business alongside its established agriculture, forestry and construction operations. Commercial deliveries, field results and the pace at which larger sizes move from development into production will provide the next measures of progress.
