
Webfleet has launched a monthly benchmark tracking how vans and trucks move through 32 European cities, using anonymised commercial vehicle data rather than general traffic statistics. The Commercial Trip Monitor compares distance covered in 15 minutes and time spent idling, with early 2026 results showing marked differences between cities and countries.
Bridgestone-owned Webfleet introduced the Commercial Trip Monitor at IAA Transportation, positioning the free online tool as a way for fleet operators and other users to follow changes in urban commercial vehicle conditions over time.
Updated monthly, the monitor is built around two measures. 15-Minute Reach records how far a typical van or truck travels within a fixed 15-minute period, while Idling Intensity measures the proportion of a journey spent stationary with the engine running. Users can rank cities and examine additional information including trip volumes, distance driven, fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

The distinction from conventional traffic data is potentially useful for commercial fleets. Webfleet says the monitor focuses on repeat commercial journeys, recognising that vans and trucks can follow different routes and operating patterns from private cars and commuters.
Webfleet developed the methodology with mobility intelligence specialist Mobito. Journeys are grouped into comparable route families and assessed using a fixed-panel approach intended to make changes over time more consistent, rather than simply comparing different sets of journeys from one month to another.

Early 2026 results show considerable variation. Zaragoza, Apeldoorn and Utrecht recorded the highest average 15-Minute Reach rankings since the start of the year, while Berlin, Paris and Kraków recorded the lowest.
Poland was the only country in which every city analysed improved year-on-year for 15-Minute Reach, while idling was stable or lower across almost every comparable month. Italy produced a more mixed picture: Rome and Milan improved their reach, but Milan recorded the highest Idling Intensity in the cities covered, at 21 per cent of a typical journey, compared with 16 per cent in Paris.
Germany produced several of the largest reported declines. Berlin ranked last for average 15-Minute Reach, while commercial vehicles in Munich, Leipzig and Hamburg covered 4.4 per cent, 4.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent less ground respectively within 15 minutes than during the corresponding period in 2025.
Those figures should not be treated as a comprehensive ranking of overall fleet operating quality. The published launch material does not state how many vehicles or journeys underpin each city result, provide a breakdown between vans and HGVs, or establish how representative Webfleet-equipped vehicles are of the wider commercial vehicle population. It also does not demonstrate that individual changes were caused by factors such as congestion, roadworks, low-emission zones or regulation.
That makes the monitor most useful, at least initially, as a consistent indicator of conditions within the journeys it measures. Its value could become greater as monthly observations accumulate, giving fleets and industry observers a longer series against which to distinguish sustained changes from short-term movements.
