Bridgestone’s Bulldog facility has made a creative leap, with Bridgestone retread materials and recordings from its Bourne plant forming the centre of ‘Soft Landing’, a contemporary art exhibition by London artist Madeleine Ruggi. The show ran at Palmer Gallery from 11 July to 9 August 2025 and will return in London during Frieze Art Fair week in October. The collaboration brings industrial processes into a gallery context.
“The manufacturing environments I visit bring to my attention fascinating materials that are often taken for granted but which crucially underpin modern life… These become part of the works I create, and I invite others to notice them too… Visiting the factory… gave me valuable insight into… the highly skilled labour… and how remarkably sculptural the tread can be.” — Madeleine Ruggi
Bringing Bridgestone retread processes into a gallery setting highlights the material efficiency and second-life potential of commercial tyres. Recent Tyre News reporting shows fresh momentum around retreads in UK fleets, including a call to mandate retread tyres in public procurement to cut costs and embedded emissions.
The cultural crossover also lands as public bodies and wholesalers face closer checks on Category C3 tyres and retreads under EU labelling enforcement, a signal for better documentation and transparency across the value chain.
Bridgestone retread advocates inside the business welcomed the project.
“We’ve always believed in the beauty of our retread process, but never quite as literally as this… This is the first time Bridgestone’s Bulldog retread materials have featured in a public art installation.” Andy Mathias, Head of Marketing, North Europe
Mathias’ recent appointment underscores Bridgestone’s regional marketing focus, as previously covered by Tyre News.
‘Soft Landing’ was open to the public at Palmer Gallery (11 July–9 August 2025) and is scheduled to show again in London during Frieze Art Fair week in October.
