Leading names from the UK tyre and recycling sectors gathered this week for a Sustainability Forum led by Vaculug Limited, with discussions focused on how the tyre industry can reduce its environmental impact through circular economy practices.

Held on 7 May, the event opened with a keynote from Glenn Sherwood of Vaculug, who presented on the theme “Meeting Today’s Challenges for Tomorrow’s Future.” His talk highlighted the environmental value of commercial tyre retreading, particularly in reducing raw material usage and waste volumes in the fleet sector.

End-of-life tyres and material recovery

Jayne Phillips from Murfitts Industries followed with a session on tyre lifecycle management, outlining how Murfitts is working to extend material use through recycling processes that keep rubber in productive use beyond its first life. Her contribution emphasised the importance of full-cycle thinking in tyre design and disposal.

Outcome-based approaches to sustainability

The forum concluded with a presentation from Ian Machan of The Advanced Services Group. Machan introduced the concept of outcome-based services as a pathway to sustainability—moving the industry towards models where value is measured by performance and longevity, rather than volume of sales or short-term output.

Vaculug thanked all participants for contributing to what it called “an important dialogue on building a more sustainable future for the tyre industry.”

As the industry faces scrutiny over carbon emissions, resource usage, and end-of-life waste, retreaded commercial tyres and closed-loop material recovery are emerging as key strategies for decarbonisation. These themes are increasingly relevant across sectors—from fleet operators seeking cost-effective sustainability to manufacturers exploring extended product responsibility.
