The fifth-generation P Zero tops wet and dry handling in nine-brand shootout.

Pirelli’s new P Zero has won Auto Express’s 2025 summer tyre test, finishing first overall against nine independently sourced rivals in size 225/40 R18. Auto Express weighted wet performance most heavily, with Pirelli also strong in dry handling and cabin noise. The result gives dealers a timely pointer on UHP fitments popular with hot hatches and performance saloons.

  • Winner among nine summer tyres in 225/40 R18, independently bought.
  • Top marks for wet and dry handling, plus low in-cabin noise.
  • Adds to April victory in Tyre Reviews’ UHP test.
  • Rolling resistance not class-leading, a trade-off to note for fleets.

How Auto Express Tested

Auto Express compared nine Y-rated, XL 92-load tyres in 225/40 R18, sourced from the open market via an independent wholesaler to mirror what consumers buy. Scoring split 50 percent wet, 40 percent dry, and 10 percent noise, comfort and economy. Tests covered wet braking and handling, aquaplaning, dry braking and handling, interior noise and rolling resistance.

What The Judges Said

Auto Express wrote that Pirelli’s new PZ5 version of P Zero “scored three first places, more than any other tyre”, highlighting wins in wet and dry handling. The magazine also noted its quiet ride and composure on rough asphalt, while rolling resistance was merely mid-pack.

Why It Matters For Dealers And Fleets

The 225/40 R18 size is a high-volume UHP fitment across VW Golf GTI-class vehicles. Auto Express’s emphasis on wet performance aligns with UK driving conditions, making its findings useful for replacement-tyre advice. Dealers should note Pirelli’s strengths in control and refinement, with the caveat of average rolling resistance that may marginally affect fuel use in high-mileage fleets.

What Is New In This P Zero

Pirelli says the fifth-generation P Zero was developed using artificial intelligence-driven algorithms and extensive virtual prototyping to refine structure, grooves and contact patch. The goal was sharper handling, shorter braking, and more even wear through the tyre’s life.

Rivals in Auto Express’s test included Bridgestone Potenza Sport, Michelin Pilot Sport 5, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, Continental SportContact 7, plus new entries from Hankook, Kumho and Yokohama. Auto Express reported it was a close contest, with Pirelli “just” edging the win on the weighted scoring.

Pirelli’s new P Zero line-up is rolling out through 2025 across popular UHP sizes, with OE and EV-oriented Elect variants to follow market demand. Dealers should check current availability and label grades per size when advising customers.
