Michelin has secured a new contract with Go-Ahead, that will see the manufacturer continue to supply, fit and manage the tyres across one of the UK’s largest public transport fleets.

Michelin has secured a new contract to continue supplying, fitting and managing tyres across Go-Ahead's extensive fleet of approximately 6,750 vehicles, cementing a long-standing partnership built on quality, sustainability and environmental commitment.

The deal with one of the UK's largest public transport operators will see Michelin's Connected Solutions Division provide a comprehensive tyre management service across Go-Ahead's operations, which span more than 50 depots throughout the UK and an expanding presence in Dublin.

Sebastian Golby-Meek, Head of Procurement and Strategic Contracts at Go-Ahead, emphasised the value of the partnership: "Michelin has consistently demonstrated the value of a carefully managed tyre policy in supporting our operational performance. The quality of Michelin's products remains unparalleled within the industry, and the level of service provided is exemplary. On this basis, extending our partnership was a straightforward decision."

Sustainability Takes Centre Stage

Environmental considerations form a cornerstone of the renewed agreement, with Michelin closely aligned to Go-Ahead's Sustainable Procurement Charter. The partnership has already delivered measurable results, including notable reductions in raw material consumption, minimised waste and lower CO₂ emissions through annual reporting of sustainability initiatives and clear target-setting.

Go-Ahead plans to support the relaunch of its sustainable procurement charter in 2026, with Michelin playing a key strategic supplier role.

Electric Vehicle Focus

Under the new contract, all new vehicles will be equipped with MICHELIN X InCity EV Z 275/70 R22.5 tyres. Go-Ahead expects to order more than 1,000 buses during the contract period, with the multi-position tyres specifically designed for electric vehicles whilst remaining equally effective for combustion engine buses.

The tyres offer excellent safety, longevity and load capacity, whilst helping to reduce rolling resistance—a critical factor for both electric and conventional buses.

Go-Ahead's fleet, which has expanded significantly following recent acquisitions, now includes around 1,000 electric and hydrogen-powered buses amongst its 6,750 vehicles.

Multi-Life Tyre Management

All Michelin tyres fitted to Go-Ahead buses will undergo a multi-life process designed to maximise efficiency and sustainability. Tyres are regrooved once tread depth reaches 3-4mm, extending each casing's life during its most fuel-efficient state.

Once regrooved tyres have worn, they are retreaded at Michelin's Remix plant in Stoke—a process that conserves natural resources, doubles the Michelin casing lifespan and supports UK manufacturing.

The contract combines outsourced tyre procurement with expert management solutions and a predictable tyre budget linked to fleet activity. Go-Ahead will work with Michelin's dedicated team of tyre management operatives alongside its own in-house workshop technicians.

Training and Technical Support

To ensure Go-Ahead meets targets for safety, reliability, tyre longevity and regulatory compliance, the operator's lead technicians have participated in specialised training courses at Stoke, delivered by Michelin's Technical Department.

The partnership reflects both companies' commitment to operational excellence and environmental responsibility as the public transport sector continues its transition towards zero-emission mobility.
