Bandag has appointed Alba Tyre Management Ltd as a new franchise partner in Scotland, bringing the Kilbirnie retreader into the Bridgestone-backed network. The agreement includes new retreading equipment and use of Bridgestone’s BASys casing tracking. For commercial fleets, the move strengthens local retread supply, tyre lifecycle control and service coverage north of the border.
The partnership makes Alba a Bandag “Cornerstone Franchisee”, with Bandag positioning the deal as a strategic step in its UK network footprint. Alba says it manages around 60,000 tyres in service on Scottish roads, spanning premium retreaded truck tyres and a wider supply and fitting operation for multiple vehicle types.
In practice, this adds another established manufacturing site to Bandag’s UK capability at a time when fleets are increasingly measuring tyres by total lifecycle value, casing yield and service response times, not just purchase price.
Alba Operations Director David Wilson said access to a combined retread, casing and service offer drove the decision. He described the support package as “a full front-to-end provision of services”, including premium casing supply, access to Bridgestone’s new tyre range, fleet programmes and mounted wheel provision.
Wilson also set out Alba’s positioning in the market: “For us, we will never get into a war about price. We’re about premium quality and delivering a circular, joined-up approach for commercial fleets.”
As part of the agreement, Alba expects new retreading machinery to be installed, including a Bandag builder machine. The companies say this will raise manufacturing capacity by at least 2,000 additional retread tyres per year initially, with potential for further gains as throughput builds. Alba currently employs 26 people and says the expansion could support new roles over time.
A key operational change will be implementation of BASys, Bridgestone’s system for tracking each casing through collection, retreading and refitment. For fleet tyre managers, the practical benefit is tighter control of casing history, clearer audit trails, and better decision-making on whether to retread, repair or retire a casing at each stage.
Bandag Service Operations Business Partner Mike Howling said the model rests on “three pillars”: premium casing supply, established fleet relationships and locally based dealers. He added that Bandag is “not about quantity, but quality franchise partners”.
This builds on wider moves across the sector to connect tyre manufacturing and aftermarket service with better data and lifecycle management, including recent developments in the way major manufacturers are applying digital tools and analytics across the tyre value chain.
