Autotech Training has launched the National Tyre Distributors Association’s (NTDA) Licensed Electric Vehicle Tyre Technician (LEVTT) programme, becoming the first provider in Great Britain to do so. The course is designed to prepare tyre technicians for the unique safety and servicing requirements of electric and hybrid vehicles.
The growing uptake of electric and hybrid vehicles on UK roads is reshaping technician training priorities. The LEVTT certification equips tyre professionals with the necessary knowledge to safely service EV and hybrid tyres — particularly important given the high-voltage components and weight distribution differences in these vehicles.
The NTDA’s LEVTT programme sits within its wider Tyre Technician Professional Development Scheme. It aims to improve standards across the sector by providing a recognised, self-regulated licensing framework. Key learning areas include:
■ EV/Hybrid Awareness: Identifying vehicle types, understanding electrical hazards, and managing safety protocols during tyre-related work.
■ Tyre Construction and Standards: Training includes EV-specific tyre features, compliant repair techniques to BSAU159g, and safe jacking methods.
■ Workplace Safety: Includes practical risk assessment and health and safety best practices, particularly in commercial fleet environments.
The course is not intended for mechanical repair work but focuses strictly on tyre safety and handling.
As EVs become mainstream, many tyre professionals require upskilling to meet new safety standards. Tyre servicing on EVs can present risks not seen in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The LEVTT programme addresses these through targeted training, ensuring technicians have both awareness and practical capability.
Autotech Training delivers the course from its Milton Keynes base or directly at customer workshops, offering flexible access to the programme.
Autotech Training is an NTDA-approved provider and is recognised for its commitment to standards in the UK aftermarket. The addition of LEVTT to its course portfolio builds on its offering in electric/hybrid vehicle training and ADAS systems.
The rollout of LEVTT reflects an increasing industry shift toward specialised training aligned with EV safety requirements. With growing demand for EV-specific tyre knowledge (from construction to load handling) certified programmes like LEVTT will become integral across passenger and fleet tyre sectors. This also supports safer workshop environments as electrified drivetrains become the norm.
