TyreSafe has formed its first international partnership with Safe Transport and Survivors Support Uganda (STASSU), a national NGO focused on road and water transport safety and crash survivor support in Uganda.
The collaboration aims to reduce tyre-related incidents and road deaths in East Africa by sharing two decades of UK tyre safety resources and experience.
TyreSafe says the partnership is grounded in a shared commitment to “Vision Zero” — a goal of zero harm to road users caused by illegal or poorly maintained tyres.
“We are delighted to be approached by the STASSU who have similar aims and vision as ourselves. These include Vision Zero – zero harm to road users on the UK’s roads due to illegal and poorly maintained tyres, and to empower road users with tyre safety knowledge to reduce incidents relating to illegal and poorly maintained tyres,” TyreSafe stated.
By opening up access to its extensive campaigns, research, and safety materials, TyreSafe hopes to support STASSU in engaging with road users across Uganda — and eventually, the wider continent.
“By sharing our twenty years of campaigning history and resources we will be able to assist the STASSU to hit the ground running by helping them utilise our wide breadth of experience, campaigns and research to engage with road users across Uganda and ultimately across the African Continent with the tyre safety message,” the organisation said.
The partnership brings together two organisations committed to improving driver behaviour and road safety outcomes. It marks a milestone in TyreSafe’s efforts to broaden the reach of its tyre safety campaigns.
Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said:
“We are delighted to welcome STASSU as TyreSafe’s first international partner. Sam and his team are doing remarkable work to improve transport safety in Uganda, and we are honoured to support their efforts. This partnership is an exciting opportunity to share knowledge, resources and ideas to improve tyre safety in both of our nations—and ultimately to help save lives.”
Sam Bambanza, Executive Director of STASSU, added:
“Tyre safety is an often-overlooked but vital aspect of road safety in Uganda. We admire the work TyreSafe has done in the UK and are thrilled to be joining forces. With access to TyreSafe’s materials and expertise, and utilising their research and education resources, we aim to significantly improve public awareness to reduce the number of tyre-related incidents. Together, we can build a culture of tyre safety that protects families and communities across Uganda.”
STASSU recently launched a national guide for creating Safe School Zones in Uganda and is recognised for engaging closely with government institutions and policymakers. TyreSafe, meanwhile, continues to expand its influence through UK-focused campaigns, including its updated Tyre Safety Guide for Towing and the upcoming Tyre Safety Month.
The two organisations are scheduled to hold a virtual meeting in the coming weeks to plan the next stages of their partnership and discuss how best to localise TyreSafe’s materials for the Ugandan audience.
