Nokian Tyres has launched the Snowproof 3P, a new premium winter tyre for Central and Southern European markets, with up to 40% of its raw materials drawn from renewable, recycled or ISCC PLUS certified sources and third-party performance verification from TÜV SÜD. For retailers and wholesalers building their winter ranges now, the release schedule and SKU depth are the immediate commercial story.
Fifty products across 17 to 21 inch rim diameters are available this autumn, with all but one carrying the XL load index. Nokian intends to extend that to 98 SKUs spanning 96 sizes from 16 to 22 inches. The breadth of XL fitments reflects a deliberate response to the changing European vehicle parc: as SUVs and battery electric vehicles represent a growing proportion of new registrations, the load and dimensional demands placed on winter tyre ranges have shifted materially upward. Retailers stocking a winter range today are managing a significantly wider spread of rim sizes and load ratings than was typical five years ago, and the Snowproof 3P's size architecture is calibrated for that reality.
The tyre is built around what Nokian calls its Alpine Performance Concept 3.0, a Triple Zone Tread comprising an Arctic Zone with two distinct 3D-locking sipe geometries for snow and wet braking, an Aqua Zone with a blade groove design to increase groove volume and resist aquaplaning, and a Performance Zone engineered for directional stability and steering feedback. The Alpine Grip Compound uses a new generation of polymers and renewable resins combined with what Nokian describes as the highest proportion of silica it has used in a Central European winter tyre; high silica content is associated with maintaining compound flexibility at low temperatures while supporting wet grip and reducing rolling resistance, which matters both for combustion engine fuel economy and EV range.
Aramid fibre reinforcement is standard in all sizes from 17 inches upward, embedded in the sidewall to resist punctures and pothole damage. A rim protector guards against kerb strikes. The Power Lock Core incorporates Performance Bead Rings intended to maintain stability during emergency manoeuvres at speed. SilentDrive acoustic foam is bonded to the inner liner to attenuate the cabin noise frequencies that become more perceptible in the quieter cabins of electric vehicles.
On sustainability, Nokian states that up to 40% of the Snowproof 3P by content consists of renewable, recycled and ISCC PLUS certified raw materials, of which 2% are certified under the ISCC PLUS mass-balanced approach from bio-based, bio-circular or circular feedstock, with typical variation between sizes of around 1%. The company's stated target is to reach 50% sustainable material content across its tyre portfolio by 2030. The tyre is manufactured at Nokian's facility in Oradea, Romania, which the company says is the first full-scale tyre factory in the world to operate at zero scope 1 and scope 2 CO2 emissions; select sizes are also produced at the original Nokia, Finland plant. For procurement and sustainability teams at fleet operators or retailers building green purchasing policies, ISCC PLUS certification means the bio-based or circular content in the supply chain has been independently audited against a defined mass-balance standard, rather than relying solely on the manufacturer's own accounting.
The tyre carries the Premium TÜV SÜD Tire Mark, an independent certification confirming the product benchmarks favourably against competitors on quality and performance. This external validation is a meaningful commercial asset for retailers: it provides a third-party reference point that can be used in consumer-facing sales conversations without the retailer needing to substantiate performance claims independently.
Nokian Tyres Senior Vice President for Central Europe Tommi Alhola said the size range and load ratings were built specifically around the direction in which vehicle choices are moving, noting that larger rim sizes and heavier loads are more prevalent than ever as EV and SUV adoption grows.
For tyre retail and wholesale businesses, the Snowproof 3P raises a practical ranging question that goes beyond this single product. The near-universal XL specification across 50 launch SKUs, and the planned extension to 98 SKUs, signals that Nokian is treating heavy-load, large-rim winter fitments as the new baseline rather than a premium sub-segment.
Businesses that have not yet revised their winter stocking model to reflect the shift toward heavier, wider EV and SUV fitments risk both lost sales and a mismatch between their held stock and the vehicles arriving in their bays.
The Snowproof 3P's range architecture, alongside its TÜV SÜD certification and sustainability credentials, also positions it as a product suited to fleet tender conversations where third-party performance verification and auditable green procurement criteria are increasingly required.
