Micheldever Tyre Services has completed the acquisition of Tyre Spot Autocentres, adding 11 retail sites across the North East and a distribution operation in County Durham. The deal strengthens Micheldever’s regional retail and wholesale presence as the group continues to expand its Protyre Autocare network across the UK.

A stronger North East platform

Tyre Spot Autocentres has traded for more than 40 years and employs 148 people across the region. Its retail centres will be rebranded as Protyre Autocare, while the County Durham distribution centre will be operated by Micheldever Tyre Services.

The move gives Micheldever greater scale in a region where it already serves retail and wholesale customers. It also adds local workshop capacity in tyres, servicing and MOTs at a time when larger operators are continuing to build wider fast-fit and autocare networks.

Founded in 1972, Micheldever Tyre Services is one of the UK’s largest tyre wholesalers. Its retail division now operates 195 fast-fit and mechanical service centres, with the company targeting further national growth.

Why the deal matters

The acquisition reflects continued consolidation in UK tyre retail, where branch density, logistics infrastructure and workshop capability are becoming key competitive factors. Tyre News has recently reported similar network moves, including Elite Garages completing its 14 ex-ATS branch transfer and Formula One Autocentres setting out further expansion plans after changes in the fast-fit sector.

The wholesale element is also significant. Distribution capacity remains central to service levels for tyre dealers, fleets and autocentres, particularly where same-day or rapid regional supply supports workshop throughput. Tyre News has also covered recent investment in wholesale infrastructure, including Oak Group Holdings’ planned Newport warehouse.

Graham Mitchell, CEO of Micheldever Tyre Services, said the deal marked an “important step forward” for the business. He said the acquisition would strengthen Micheldever’s presence in a region where it already has established sites and customers, while adding scale, capability and logistics infrastructure.

Integration now becomes the focus

Micheldever said the next stage will centre on a managed integration for colleagues, customers and partners. Tom Carver, chief commercial officer at Micheldever Tyre Services, said the acquisition supports the company’s ambition to grow its retail network to 350 centres nationally by 2030.

Carver said Tyre Spot shared Micheldever’s customer-first culture and service focus, describing the deal as a natural fit. He added that the business would bring teams together while recognising established operations, customer relationships and local experience.

For Tyre Spot, the transaction marks the next phase for a long-established independent operator. Johnathon Shaw, managing director of Tyre Spot Ltd, said the family-run business had grown into the largest independent tyre supplier in the North East by focusing on service and product quality.

Shaw said the business would be in “safe hands” with Micheldever Tyre Services, citing shared values and a customer-first approach.

A wider signal for tyre retail

For the tyre trade, the deal points to further pressure on independent and regional operators as larger groups look for scale. Acquisitions can provide stronger purchasing power, broader logistics coverage and central systems, but they also change the competitive landscape for local garages and wholesalers.

The rebrand to Protyre Autocare will be watched closely by customers, staff and suppliers across the North East. The key test will be whether Micheldever can preserve Tyre Spot’s local service reputation while integrating the business into a larger national retail and distribution platform.
