Lothian, Scotland’s largest municipal bus operator, has renewed its longstanding tyre supply agreement with Michelin for a further three years, continuing a relationship that now spans more than 30 years. The new deal reinforces both companies’ shared commitment to environmental targets, with a focus on tyre sustainability and operational efficiency across Lothian’s 730-vehicle fleet.
Under the renewed contract, Michelin will continue to manage the tyre lifecycle across Lothian’s fleet using its multi-life process, which includes regrooving and retreading of tyres to maximise usage and reduce waste. This approach supports Lothian’s carbon reduction strategy by improving fuel efficiency and extending tyre lifespan.
Tyres are regrooved when tread depths reach 3–4mm to maintain performance and efficiency, and retreaded at Michelin’s Remix plant in Stoke-on-Trent, supporting UK manufacturing and resource conservation.
Michelin tyres have been specified as original equipment for all new Lothian vehicles, including the operator’s recent rollout of 35 Volvo BZL Electric buses. These vehicles are primarily fitted with MICHELIN X InCity EV Z 275/70 R22.5 tyres—designed for electric applications but compatible with diesel-powered buses. The tyres are engineered to deliver longevity, high load capacity and low rolling resistance, helping reduce emissions and running costs.
As part of the ‘Superfit’ policy, Michelin will continue to provide in-house tyre fitting and inspection services at all five Lothian depots. This includes proactive inspections to prevent downtime and detailed training sessions for engineering teams. The fixed cost-per-mile model gives Lothian predictable budgeting and operational control, while benefiting from Michelin’s technical support.
Colin Barnes, Engineering Director at Lothian, said the long-term relationship with Michelin makes commercial and operational sense:
“Michelin fully understands the needs of our business so renewing this partnership was a simple decision. Having a fixed cost per mile and the expertise of Michelin on board allows us to manage our entire fleet more effectively.”
This partnership illustrates how multi-life tyre strategies and smart tyre management can contribute directly to fleet sustainability and emissions reduction, especially as operators transition to zero-emission vehicles. Michelin’s integration of lifecycle services with tyre supply shows how manufacturers are supporting transport decarbonisation through practical, scalable solutions. For public and private fleets alike, extending tyre lifespan is becoming as critical as adopting electric powertrains.
