
Commercial tyre technology dominated the week ending 19 September, with automation, digital inspection and wear-stage tread design all moving closer to real fleet and workshop use. Elsewhere, Hankook prepared to start European truck tyre production, California's replacement-tyre efficiency rules entered a new implementation debate, and UK tyre recovery capacity returned to the policy agenda.
IAA Transportation provided the clearest cluster of future-facing tyre developments this week. The individual technologies are different, but several share a practical objective: extracting more useful life, information or operating value from a commercial tyre after it has entered service.
Michelin unveiled NAZCA, an automated truck, bus and coach tyre regrooving system that uses laser scanning and algorithms to determine cutting depth around an individual tyre. Around 20 machines are undergoing European pilot testing, with wider deployment planned during 2027. Michelin says the system could increase workshop regrooving capacity by 30% to 50%, depending on operating conditions, while requiring less than three minutes of technician involvement per tyre. Those remain manufacturer figures, but the move is significant because it applies automation to a well-established life-extension process that has traditionally depended heavily on manual skill.
The same IAA programme also included a Michelin prototype bus tyre containing 70% renewable and recycled materials. It is a demonstrator rather than evidence that equivalent material content is ready for volume production across Michelin's commercial range, but it adds another development stage to the manufacturer's work on reducing dependence on virgin materials.
Hankook approached tyre life from a different direction. Its new Smart Control AW53 and DW53 winter truck tyres use tread features that progressively appear as the tyre wears. Additional 3D sipes become visible at around 40% wear and concealed grooves at around 70%, with the design intended to support performance deeper into the first tread life. Hankook has published internal comparison figures for new-tyre winter performance, but detailed independent results for the later wear stages have not been released.
Continental, meanwhile, commissioned Transense Technologies' Translogik division to develop a bespoke digital tyre inspection device for its global service network. The six-month programme is intended to move into production from the second quarter of 2027 if development is completed successfully. The existing TLGX platform can combine tread-depth and pressure measurement with functions including RFID and TPMS reading, bringing identification and condition information into the same inspection workflow.
None of these developments proves that commercial fleets are fundamentally changing how they buy tyres. What they do show is continuing investment in the stages between fitting a new tyre and finally removing its casing from service. Inspection, wear management, regrooving and retreading increasingly sit alongside new-tyre performance when manufacturers describe the economic value of their commercial products.

Technology was only part of Hankook's week. The manufacturer has produced the first pre-production truck tyre at its expanded Rácalmás plant in Hungary and says series production will start in October.
The €540 million expansion will provide capacity for more than 800,000 truck and bus tyres annually once ramped up. More importantly for its European operation, it becomes Hankook's first TBR manufacturing base in the region. Its European truck and bus tyre business has previously been supplied from factories in Korea and China.
That does not establish a wider reshoring trend by itself. It does, however, materially change the production footprint behind Hankook's European commercial-tyre business and places substantial TBR capacity closer to its regional customers.

Away from Hannover, California's replacement-tyre efficiency programme produced a different kind of industry signal.
The California Energy Commission approved the regulations in August, with Phase 1 applying from 1 January 2029 and a tighter Phase 2 from 1 January 2033. The rules apply to replacement tyres for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks, with exemptions for several categories. The CEC says most tyres currently on the market already meet the first-stage requirements and estimates around 30% comply with Phase 2.
Dunlop Tire North America challenged some of the economic assumptions behind the programme this week. Its analysis modelled different scenarios in which redesign costs, purchase price and service life altered the consumer benefit substantially. Dunlop itself describes those scenarios as illustrations rather than predictions of how manufacturers will actually redesign products.
The CEC, meanwhile, says testing commissioned on 179 passenger and light-truck tyres found no relationship between efficiency and either wet or dry traction, and projects relatively modest average additional purchase costs under the two phases.
The disagreement is worth watching because implementation will ultimately test questions that modelling cannot settle today: which products require redesign, what those changes cost, how manufacturers balance rolling resistance against other characteristics and whether product availability changes as the deadlines approach.

In the UK, the Tyre Recovery Association's annual briefing came with two very different regulatory timelines.
Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking for permitted and licensed waste-receiving sites in England and Wales begins on 1 October. The withdrawal of the T8 waste exemption, by contrast, still has no confirmed commencement date despite the Government finalising the required legislation.
The wider debate increasingly concerns what happens to end-of-life tyres once collected. The TRA is arguing for tighter controls on whole-tyre exports and estimates that more than 150,000 tonnes of licensed UK recycling and remanufacturing capacity is currently unused. It also says roughly 1,000 tonnes of whole waste tyres leave the UK each day. Those are industry estimates advanced as part of the association's case for reform, rather than independently established measurements, but they give the policy discussion a specific domestic-capacity dimension.

One potentially important development sits outside TNM's current coverage.
China's Dawn Polymer Materials says its dynamic vulcanised alloy inner-liner material has moved through small-batch processing and tyre-building trials and is scheduled for scaled deployment with an unnamed tyre manufacturer during the second half of 2026.
Dawn claims substantially greater air impermeability than conventional butyl rubber while allowing a thinner and lighter inner liner. Those performance figures require independent and product-level validation, and the manufacturer involved in the planned deployment has not been identified. The development worth recording at this stage is narrower: the technology is moving from material and tyre trials towards an industrial-scale manufacturing test.

One passenger-tyre number also deserves attention.
Continental plans to introduce more than 650 additional ultra-high-performance sizes worldwide by the end of 2027. In this programme, it defines UHP as 18 inches and above. Products in that size range increased from 41% of Continental's global passenger-car tyre sales across its brands in 2020 to 55% in 2025.
The programme is not evidence that every market is moving at the same pace, but it gives useful scale to the continuing shift towards larger fitments and the resulting pressure on manufacturers to broaden size coverage.

US tyre manufacturing could become more exposed to trade-policy action after the United Steelworkers called for a Section 201 investigation into tyre imports. The request is potentially significant, but a broader conclusion needs official trade data, manufacturer responses and evidence of whether the US authorities proceed.
Wanli's proposed Malaysian tyre factory is also progressing. The project has moved into engineering work after its announcement earlier this year, but that is better treated as evidence of continued project development than as a fresh manufacturing story in its own right.

The next milestones arrive quickly.
Hankook says series TBR production in Hungary will begin in October 2026. England and Wales introduce mandatory Digital Waste Tracking for relevant waste receivers on 1 October 2026. Michelin plans broader NAZCA deployment during 2027, while Continental's bespoke Translogik inspection device is targeted for production from Q2 2027.
California's first replacement-tyre efficiency requirements remain further out, taking effect on 1 January 2029.
This week's developments therefore span very different levels of maturity. Some are already entering factories and workshops; others remain prototypes, regulatory models or industrialisation programmes. That distinction matters more than presenting them as evidence of one sweeping tyre-industry transition.
What is clear is that the industry's future workload continues to spread beyond designing and selling the new tyre. Manufacturers and service businesses are also working on how tyres are inspected, managed through wear, regrooved, manufactured closer to markets, built from different materials and assessed against new regulatory requirements.
