Pothole Damage Drives Tyre and Wheel Repair Demand

Britain’s worsening pothole problem is creating fresh demand across tyre replacement and smart repair channels, as motorists face higher risks of wheel, suspension and tyre damage. RAC data points to severe pressure on local roads, while repair businesses report rising alloy wheel work and tyre brands position value ranges for cost-conscious drivers.

A growing repair burden

The RAC says drivers in England and Wales encounter an average of six potholes per mile on council-controlled roads. Its latest data also shows pothole-related breakdowns remain a major issue, with 26,048 breakdowns in 2025 linked to damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs or distorted wheels.

That matters for the tyre trade because pothole impacts rarely affect one component in isolation. A hard impact can damage tyre sidewalls, distort alloy wheels, disturb alignment and accelerate suspension wear. For retailers and fast-fit operators, this can turn a tyre enquiry into a wider inspection and repair conversation.

The issue has also become more visible in 2026. The RAC reported that heavy rain early in the year contributed to a spike in pothole-related call-outs, as water-filled holes became harder for drivers to spot. It said February 2026 reports averaged 225 per day, compared with 66 per day in the same month a year earlier.

Alloy wheel repairs rise

Smart repair specialist Revive! has described the problem as a “pandemic of potholes” after a period of cold and wet weather. The company said poor road conditions had already driven a rise in alloy wheel repair activity, with earlier figures showing a 22% increase in alloy wheel repairs linked to deteriorating roads.

The repair trend reflects a wider aftermarket challenge. Motorists are delaying discretionary spending, but pothole damage often forces immediate action. That creates demand for tyres, wheels, alignment checks and smart repair services, while also putting pressure on customers to control costs.

Cost-sensitive performance fitments

Envoy Tyres is using the market conditions to highlight its Motiva UHP range, aimed at drivers of higher-performance vehicles who want a more affordable ultra-high-performance tyre option. The company positions Motiva UHP as a value-led alternative for motorists facing repeated tyre and wheel costs.

Tyre News has previously reported on Envoy’s UK brand awareness push through Paul Cowland’s appointment as brand ambassador, which included the Motiva UHP line among its core ranges.  Tyre News has also covered Envoy’s Irish distribution agreement with MT Wholesale, extending availability of its car, SUV and van fitments across the island of Ireland.

Road funding remains the backdrop

The Asphalt Industry Alliance’s ALARM 2026 survey estimated that England and Wales face a record £18.62 billion carriageway repair backlog, which would take 12 years to clear at current rates.  That long-term maintenance gap suggests pothole damage will remain a recurring demand driver for tyre retailers, wheel repair specialists and fleet maintenance providers.

For the aftermarket, the opportunity is practical rather than promotional. Retailers can support drivers by checking tyres, wheels, alignment and suspension after heavy impacts, while helping customers understand the risk of delayed repairs. For fleets, the same issue adds cost, downtime and duty-of-care considerations.
