Nokian Tyres and Pirelli have been named in the Financial Times’ Europe’s Climate Leaders 2026 ranking, making them the only tyre manufacturers listed among 600 European companies recognised for emissions progress. Nokian Tyres achieved the stronger sector result, ranking 29th overall, while Pirelli placed 364th.

A stronger result for Nokian Tyres

Nokian Tyres scored 78.7 points and ranked 29th overall, confirming its position as the highest-scoring tyre manufacturer in the 2026 list. The Finnish manufacturer said the recognition reflected progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noted that it has appeared in the FT ranking every year since the list began in 2021.

Susanna Tusa, Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Nokian Tyres, said the company’s climate actions include “using mostly renewable energy” and building what it describes as the world’s first full-scale zero-CO₂-emissions tyre factory for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

That context matters for tyre dealers, fleets and original equipment buyers because sustainability claims are increasingly judged against external benchmarks, not only company reports. Tyre News has previously covered Nokian Tyres’ Romanian factory reaching one million tyres, a milestone tied to European capacity and lower-emissions manufacturing.

Pirelli maintains external recognition

Pirelli also featured in the FT ranking, placing 364th with 58.4 points. While the gap to Nokian Tyres is clear, inclusion still places Pirelli within a selected group of European companies assessed for emissions reduction and climate disclosure progress.

The result follows other sustainability-related recognition for Pirelli. Tyre News reported earlier this year that Pirelli was recognised in S&P Global’s 2026 Sustainability Yearbook after scoring 86 points in the 2025 Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Tyre News has also covered JLR and Pirelli’s FSC-certified tyre project using rice husk silica, which linked tyre materials, traceability and original equipment supply.

Why the ranking matters

The Financial Times and Statista ranking assesses European companies over a five-year period, with emphasis on reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and emissions intensity. The 2026 methodology also considers broader climate commitments and engagement with organisations such as CDP and the Science Based Targets initiative.

For the tyre sector, the ranking is relevant because manufacturing, raw materials, logistics and end-of-life treatment all face closer scrutiny. External comparisons can influence procurement decisions, fleet supplier reviews and investor assessments, especially where buyers want evidence beyond product-level claims.

The limited tyre-sector representation also shows how difficult broad climate rankings remain for manufacturers with energy-intensive production and complex global supply chains. Nokian Tyres’ high placement gives it a clear benchmark advantage, while Pirelli’s inclusion reinforces the growing link between sustainability performance and premium tyre positioning.
