With many British consumers holding off on purchases until the annual Black Friday sales bonanza, van drivers and fleet managers are bracing themselves for one of the busiest delivery periods of the year.
An estimated £14 billion worth of goods are set to be purchased during the sales event, placing enormous pressure on light commercial vehicle operators to ensure timely deliveries. For those reliant on LCVs running smoothly, proper vehicle preparation is essential.
Tyre manufacturer Davanti has shared three key checks to help fleet managers and drivers avoid unnecessary stress during the peak period.
Before the busy weeks ahead, drivers should check tyre pressure using either a digital tyre inflator at home or at a petrol station. Low tyre pressure negatively affects handling, increases braking distance and raises the risk of blowouts.
With winter weather making road surfaces more challenging, adequate tyre tread is crucial for maintaining grip and vehicle stability. Davanti recommends the simple 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves, and if the outer band remains hidden, the tread is above the legal limit.
Any visible damage such as cuts, bumps or bulges should prompt an immediate visit to a tyre professional.
All vehicle lights should be checked regularly, with drivers advised to verify that headlights are working properly and correctly positioned, along with indicators and parking lights.
Brake lights deserve particular attention, as faulty lights can result in being pulled over by police and facing a fine. Davanti suggests asking someone to stand behind the vehicle whilst applying the brakes to confirm they are functioning correctly.
For added peace of mind during peak delivery season, fleet operators may wish to consider an all-season LCV tyre designed for year-round performance.
Davanti's Vantoura 4-Seasons was developed through extensive testing, from the Arctic Circle conditions at Test World in Finland to the brand's European Development Centre at Applus IDIADA.
The tyre features solid shoulder blocks for stability under heavy loads, three deep longitudinal grooves to resist aquaplaning, and sawtooth sipes engineered to grip icy surfaces. Combined with a specially formulated all-season compound, the design aims to deliver reliable performance across varying conditions.
