Mid and East Antrim Borough Council says its use of Michelin tyres across its commercial vehicle fleet has helped improve efficiency, reduce downtime and cut tyre-related environmental impact.

The Northern Ireland local authority has been fitting Michelin tyres across its 160-vehicle commercial fleet since 2021, after previously using a mixed-brand approach. It continues to procure tyres through the Crown Commercial Service framework RM6535.

According to the council, its adoption of a multi-life tyre policy for HGVs has contributed to lower waste and reduced carbon emissions over the three years to the end of 2025. Michelin says the programme helped divert 10.2 tonnes from landfill, avoid the use of 13.2 tonnes of material compared with producing new tyres, and deliver CO2 savings of 27.7 tonnes.

The council’s fleet includes around 100 vans used for services including parks maintenance, welfare checks and dog warden duties, alongside 60 HGVs such as refuse collection vehicles and hook loaders. Vans are fitted with Michelin Agilis tyres, while trucks use products from the Michelin X Multi range.

For its truck fleet, the council has adopted a multi-life policy involving regrooving tyres when tread depth reaches 3-4mm, followed by retreading and a further regroove cycle where suitable. The authority uses both Michelin Remix and Encore retread products.

A council representative said the move to premium tyres involved a higher upfront cost than budget alternatives, but argued that longer tyre life, fewer punctures and lower downtime had improved overall value.

The authority has also used the CCS framework RM6315 to access Michelin Connected Fleet services, including data on compliance, fuel use, harsh braking and driver behaviour. The council says this supports driver coaching, safety improvements and further efficiency gains.

Fleet service support is provided locally by Modern Tyres in Ballyclare, while Michelin account support is handled by Primoz Lakota, Truck Sales Account Manager and Defence Account Manager for the UK and Ireland.

For fleet operators and public sector buyers, the update adds another example of how premium multi-life tyre policies are being positioned around whole-life cost, uptime and sustainability rather than just initial purchase price.
