IAAF pledges Armed Forces support, targeting workforce gaps in the independent aftermarket.

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant, committing to support veterans, reservists, and service leavers in finding careers across the UK’s independent aftermarket. The signing took place during Automechanika Birmingham's Motorvate programme on 4 June 2025.

The pledge, signed by IAAF CEO Mark Field, is part of the Mission Automotive initiative, developed by Mission Community in partnership with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The programme connects military talent with career opportunities throughout the automotive industry.

Addressing workforce gaps with military skills

By signing the Covenant, the IAAF joins a growing list of industry bodies recognising the value that Armed Forces personnel bring to civilian roles. The UK’s aftermarket sector faces mounting pressure from an ageing workforce and increasing technical requirements, making talent acquisition a priority.

Mark Field said the decision reflects both a moral and strategic commitment:

“The skills and mindset of the UK’s Armed Forces community align perfectly with the needs of the aftermarket, from technical ability to problem-solving under pressure. Signing the Covenant is not only the right thing to do, it’s a smart move for the future of our sector.”

Sector-wide benefits for inclusivity and resilience

The signing took place at Motorvate, Automechanika’s platform for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The IAAF’s involvement adds momentum to the push for a more inclusive and resilient industry workforce.

Mission Community CEO James Cameron highlighted the national reach of both the aftermarket and the veteran community:

“The independent aftermarket touches every corner of the country – and that national footprint mirrors the distribution of veteran talent. We’re excited to work with IAAF members to turn this pledge into real, life-changing opportunities.”

The IAAF’s commitment aligns with broader industry trends towards workforce renewal and inclusion, particularly as aftermarket services adapt to increasingly complex vehicle technologies. By tapping into the Armed Forces talent pool, the sector gains access to highly disciplined individuals with proven technical and problem-solving capabilities, a timely move in an era of accelerated change.
