Furness Cars & Commercials, a family-run business specialising in recovery and vehicle servicing, has slashed over £5,000 a year in operating costs by adopting the Josam Cam Aligner wheel alignment system. Supplied by Automotive Equipment Solutions (AES UK), the system has transformed the workshop’s efficiency and significantly reduced tyre wear.

Revolutionising Workshop Operations
Founded in 1983, Furness Cars & Commercials, based in Barrow-in-Furness, has long offered recovery, repairs, and MOT services for a wide range of vehicles, from motorbikes to articulated HGVs. However, the company faced mounting costs due to its reliance on external specialists for wheel alignment.

According to Kevin Grieve, Director at Furness Cars, the team previously conducted fleet alignments twice a year by hiring an external service provider. This process was time-consuming, costly, and led to premature tyre wear between inspections.

“We were spending £4-5,000 a year just getting someone in to do the alignment,” Kevin explained. “And then there was the cost of changing tyres prematurely.”

To address these challenges, the business invested in AES UK’s Josam Cam Aligner three years ago. This compact wheel alignment system delivers fast, accurate results for commercial vehicles and has become an indispensable tool in the workshop.

Immediate Savings and Improved Efficiency
The results were immediate. By bringing wheel alignment in-house, Furness Cars now performs regular checks with greater accuracy and flexibility, resulting in annual savings of £5-6,000.

“If we change a set of tyres – or bring a vehicle in for a safety inspection and the tyres are starting to look like they’re rubbing on the edges – then we can immediately see what’s going on and do the adjustment in less than half an hour,” Kevin said.

The system’s user-friendly interface allows technicians to carry out alignments directly in the pit. Adjustments are completed swiftly, and a detailed printout is ready by the time equipment is packed away.

Reduced Tyre Wear and Enhanced Safety
AES UK highlights that proper tyre alignment improves fuel efficiency, extends tyre life, and enhances safety. These benefits have been evident at Furness Cars, with drivers reporting better handling and reduced tyre wear.

“We’re not changing tyres because they’re wearing prematurely,” Kevin added. “We’re changing them now because they’ve run their life.”

Outstanding Support from AES UK
Kevin also praised AES UK’s aftersales service, citing regular servicing, calibration visits, and excellent customer support from Director Russ Coad.

“There’s no faff at all, so it’s up there with one of the best bits of kit we’ve bought for our workshop,” he said.
