Michelin has launched its X® Works Z2 and D2 tyre range across Europe, targeting construction and waste-management fleets operating in mixed on- and off-road conditions. The new range, available from June 2025, offers improved rolling resistance, extended tread life, and increased load capacity — addressing key operational and environmental pressures in the commercial vehicle sector.

Developed for demanding fleet environments

Designed for regional and urban journeys involving both paved and off-road surfaces, the X® Works Z2 & D2 range includes sizes for steer and drive axles. Initially launched in the 315/80R22.5 size, Michelin has since expanded availability to 13R22.5 and 385/65 HL specifications.

The tyres are engineered for enhanced efficiency and durability, helping fleet managers reduce operating costs and vehicle downtime — critical in high-frequency industries like construction and waste handling.

Key performance improvements

Fuel savings and emissions reduction
A redesigned tread reduces rolling resistance, helping fleets cut fuel consumption and CO2 output. The steer-axle variant is the first in its category to achieve a B-grade EU label for rolling resistance — without compromising traction or noise levels.

Extended tyre life
Michelin claims a 10% longer lifespan for the Z2 steer axle and 25% for the D2 drive axle, compared with its previous generation tyres. This translates to fewer replacements and improved cost efficiency.

Robust design and retread potential
The new range includes reinforced sidewall protectors and is optimised for retreading, with 90% of casings eligible for the MICHELIN REMIX process. This supports a more sustainable lifecycle for commercial tyres.

High load capacity and EV readiness
With a load index of 158/150, the tyres can support up to 8.5 tonnes per single fitment — an improvement over the previous 8-tonne capacity. This makes them compatible with the increased axle loads often found in electric trucks.

Reliable grip across the lifespan
Traction is maintained in harsh conditions throughout the tyre’s use, with the 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) marking ensuring compliance with winter traction regulations.

Addressing cost and environmental pressures

Fleets in the construction and waste sectors face rising fuel costs, stringent CO2 rules, and the operational risks of downtime. The X® Works Z2 & D2 range is designed to meet these demands by improving lifecycle value while aligning with EU climate goals. Its compatibility with retreading and electric vehicle use further supports fleet sustainability strategies.

The B-rated rolling resistance is especially notable in a segment typically associated with rugged, high-traction designs. As more fleets shift to electric vehicles and prioritise lifecycle emissions, tyre makers are under pressure to develop products that can perform across diverse terrains while maintaining energy efficiency. This launch signals Michelin’s continued investment in advanced compounds, smart tread designs, and circular tyre solutions.
