Hankook Tire & Technology has unveiled the iON evo Formula E Edition, a special release tyre that brings motorsport-derived technology to the EV road segment. Designed to commemorate Hankook’s exclusive supply partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the tyre will be released in South Korea in April 2025, followed by a limited European rollout starting in May.
The iON evo Formula E Edition integrates visual and technical cues from the GEN3 Evo iON Race tyre, used in the championship series. It features the recognisable “Colouring Groove” tread detail — a visual signature taken directly from the race tyre — alongside performance enhancements tailored for high-end EVs.
Specifically designed as a 21-inch fitment for the Tesla Model Y Performance, the tyre aims to deliver motorsport-inspired braking, handling, and cornering characteristics for everyday drivers seeking a premium EV driving experience.
Building on Formula E’s eco-conscious platform, Hankook’s limited-edition tyre draws on sustainable design principles seen in its racing counterpart. While precise material specifications have not been disclosed, the GEN3 Evo iON Race tyre is composed of up to 35% sustainable materials, including bio-based and recycled components, and features advanced fibre tech for heat resistance and structural integrity.
This alignment with low-emissions motorsport highlights Hankook’s ongoing strategy to integrate eco-performance features across its EV tyre portfolio.
The tyre will be available exclusively through Hankook’s online platform, TStation Dotcom, from 21 April 2025 in South Korea. A small-scale European release begins in Germany in May, with further expansion yet to be confirmed.
Hankook became Formula E’s exclusive tyre supplier in the 2022/23 season, providing the iON Race tyre for all participating teams. The new iON evo Formula E Edition leverages this same motorsport platform to offer road users a direct taste of that technology, bridging the gap between track-tested materials and consumer EV applications.
This launch reflects a growing trend of technology transfer from electric motorsport to EV tyre development, where manufacturers are leveraging racing partnerships to drive product innovation. The iON evo Formula E Edition reinforces Hankook’s positioning in the premium EV segment, while underlining the role of sustainable materials and performance engineering in next-generation tyre design.
