Construction haulier Bimson has reported a major boost in tyre performance after transitioning its fleet to Michelin X Multi products. The firm, which services the UK’s leading brick manufacturers, says the switch has delivered more than triple the tyre life compared to previous brands, while roadside breakdowns have halved.
Bimson operates in demanding conditions, regularly running at maximum vehicle weight and delivering to off-road construction sites. Fleet Manager David Burns benchmarked Michelin’s X Multi D tyres against previous premium brands when six newly acquired trucks came fitted with them as part of a cancelled order.
Burns noted that the Michelin tyres consistently delivered 330,000km to 350,000km in their first life. After regrooving, they achieved an additional 30,000km to 40,000km — a performance the company estimates to be three times longer than other brands they had used.
Currently, almost half of Bimson’s 74-strong DAF truck fleet is running on Michelin rubber. The operational impact has been immediate, with tyre-related roadside callouts dropping by up to 50% compared to pre-Michelin levels.
Tyre-related downtime, particularly during winter months, has historically been a major operational challenge. “We’d often see three or four breakdowns a day,” said Burns. “That’s dropped considerably since adopting Michelin.”
Bimson’s fleet uses a wide variety of Michelin tyre sizes tailored to specific axle and load configurations. The X Multi D range is fitted across drive axles, with various X Multi sizes used on steer and mid-lift axles. For particularly demanding deliveries, Michelin’s XZY3 mixed-use tyres are fitted to trailers.
Purchasing is managed via local partner Cumbria Tyre Specialist in Carlisle, with technical support from Michelin’s regional team.
While Burns initially projected an 18–24-month return on investment, performance gains have accelerated payback to under 12 months. The company is also leveraging Michelin’s multi-life tyre policy, with regrooving at 3–4mm tread depth and retreading via the Remix process at Michelin’s Stoke facility — further extending casing life and enhancing value.
The combination of Michelin’s multi-life design and durability-focused engineering aligns with wider trends in fleet cost optimisation, sustainability through retreading, and reducing downtime in logistics operations. As construction logistics demands continue to grow, tyre longevity will remain critical for maintaining service reliability and lowering lifecycle costs.
