Scunthorpe-based Clugston Distribution Services, a long-standing advocate of Michelin's multi-life policy, is singing praises for the performance and cost-saving benefits of the MICHELIN X Multi Energy tyres.
These tyres, fitted on 35 new Renault 6x2 tractor units, have demonstrated remarkable fuel savings of up to six percent, delighting the company after just six months of operation.
As a provider of general distribution and road tanker transport solutions to the bulk powder and bulk fuel sectors, Clugston Distribution Services recognises the significance of achieving efficient fuel consumption. Nigel Graham, Fleet Manager at Clugston, attributes the improved fuel savings to the lower rolling resistance of the multi-life policy tyre, combined with driver training and meticulous tyre management.
Clugston Distribution Services has wholeheartedly embraced Michelin's multi-life policy, making it a commitment for their entire fleet, which includes 110 Renault trucks and 180 trailers across multiple locations. All vehicles are specified with Michelin tyres as original equipment, ensuring consistency and quality throughout their operations.
Under this policy, when the tyres reach the end of their first life, they undergo regrooving and retreading as Michelin Remix tyres. This process maximises the performance potential of each new Michelin casing. Once the Remix tyres have served their purpose, Clugston sends the casings back to Michelin for retreading, creating Encore tyres that are then used on their flatbed trailers. This approach allows Clugston to extract the utmost value and longevity from their Michelin tyres.
Nigel Graham emphasises the versatility and effectiveness of Michelin's multi-life tyre policy, stating, "Correctly managed, we can achieve up to 250,000 km from some of our first-life tyres. The Remix tyre always performs just as well, which is little wonder after you see the Michelin Remix factory process in action. It's incredible when you witness the time, effort, and passion that goes into ensuring the Remix tyre is as good as a first-life one."

The fully managed contract package offered by Michelin has proven to be exceptional for Clugston. The Michelin account dashboard empowers them to micro-manage their tyre usage, utilising bespoke reporting mechanisms to calculate their weekly spend by vehicle or operation. This feature greatly reduces tyre-related downtime, a critical aspect for their fleet operating teams. Graham asserts, "In terms of the whole life cost of ownership of the tyre, Michelin products are without doubt the best on the market."
Clugston Distribution Services, which celebrated its 100th year of operating commercial vehicles last year, operates a diverse fleet that includes 28- to 44-tonne tractors, 3-axle extendable flatbed and semi-low trailers, bulk fuel tankers, and tipping and non-tipping discharge powder tankers. With operations spanning the UK, the company also offers specialised bulk food silo evacuation services.
