Michelin upgrades X Multi in 19.5in with higher mileage and shorter wet stops.

Michelin has unveiled its latest tyre innovation specifically designed for the demanding last-mile delivery sector – the MICHELIN X® MULTI Z2 & D2 range in 19.5'' for steer and drive axles. The new generation tyres target commercial vehicles under 19 tonnes operating on short to mid-distance routes in regional and urban environments.

The launch addresses the multiple challenges facing last-mile delivery operators, including heavy traffic, frequent braking, difficult access, poor road conditions and variable weather – all whilst navigating increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

"With these new truck tyres, Michelin is demonstrating its innovative strength," said Andrew French, B2B Sales Director – UK/ROI at Michelin. "Thanks to their high mileage, low rolling resistance and additional performance reserves, we are not only helping our customers to reduce their operating costs, but also paving the way for modern, sustainability-oriented mobility."

Significant Performance Improvements

The new range delivers substantial improvements over its predecessor, the MICHELIN X® MULTI Z/D. Key performance enhancements include up to 30% more mileage on the steer axle and 15% more mileage on the drive axle, translating to less frequent replacements and reduced fleet operating costs.

Perhaps most impressively, independent testing conducted by DEKRA in June 2025 demonstrated outstanding wet braking performance. When worn to 3.5mm of tread depth, the MICHELIN X® MULTI Z2 & D2 tyres achieved wet braking distances up to 8 metres shorter than competitors – stopping in 41.36 metres compared to 49.29 metres. This substantial safety advantage is particularly valuable for drivers navigating busy urban and suburban environments.

Year-Round Performance and Cost Savings

The tyres carry the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) marking, guaranteeing consistent all-season performance regardless of weather conditions. This versatility eliminates the need for seasonal tyre changes, further reducing operational complexity and costs.

Fleet operators can expect significant financial benefits from the new range. Thanks to a fuel efficiency class C rating, enhanced mileage and retreadability, Michelin estimates savings of up to £814 per year per truck compared to the previous generation. Additionally, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to one tonne per year per truck.

Future-Proofed for Electric Vehicles

Recognising the growing electrification of commercial vehicle fleets, the new tyres feature higher load indices in 245/70R19.5 and 285/70R19.5 sizes. For example, the 285/70R19.5 size offers an additional 300kg capacity per axle compared to the previous line, supporting up to 6.3 tonnes per axle. This enhancement addresses the increased weight demands of battery-electric trucks whilst meeting their specific operational requirements.

Advanced Technologies

Two proprietary Michelin technologies underpin the range's performance:

DURACOIL technology employs high-quality nylon reinforcement on the bead wire, providing effective casing protection, enhanced road stability and extended tyre lifespan. This reinforcement also improves the casing's retreadability, supporting multiple life cycles.

REGENION technology, which has won industry recognition, utilises self-regenerating tread sculptures produced through 3D metal printing. This innovation ensures optimal grip and tread longevity whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption.

The combination of these technologies creates a lightweight, robust and flexible casing designed to minimise unplanned downtime and maintain consistent performance throughout the tyre's service life.

The MICHELIN X® MULTI Z2 & D2 range represents Michelin's continued commitment to supporting transport professionals with solutions that deliver safety, sustainable mobility and comprehensive performance without compromise – backed by over 130 years of tyre manufacturing expertise.
