ICBA Honours Birla Carbon for Leading Safety Standards.

The International Carbon Black Association (ICBA) has recognised 13 Birla Carbon facilities with Gold-level awards under its 2024 Safety Performance Recognition Program — the highest honour available within the industry-led scheme. The awards span 11 manufacturing sites and two R&D centres located across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Birla Carbon Achieves Industry-Leading Safety Recognition

This latest milestone marks the highest number of Gold Awards earned by any ICBA member company in a single year. It highlights Birla Carbon’s consistent investment in safety across a wide operational footprint, from production facilities to research centres.

Awarded sites include:

  • R&D centres: Marietta (USA), Taloja (India)
  • Manufacturing plants: Camaçari, Cubatão (Brazil); Egypt; Gummidipoondi, Hickok (India and USA); Hungary; Italy; Jining and Renukoot (China and India); Spain; Thailand

ICBA Safety Awards: Criteria for Gold-Level Recognition

The ICBA’s Safety Performance Recognition Program evaluates performance across three levels — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — based on strict safety metrics and third-party certification standards.

Gold Award recipients must:

  • Meet all Silver-level criteria, including zero lost workday cases (LWDs), no major fire or safety citations, and significant year-on-year safety improvements
  • Hold valid external safety certifications (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, OSHA VPP), or demonstrate equivalent in-house systems
  • Maintain a minimum of three consecutive years with zero LWD cases

Promoting a Culture of Safety Across the Sector

The awards are designed to encourage high standards and industry-wide transparency, requiring members to report verified safety data and continuously improve practices. Birla Carbon’s performance stands out not only for its global consistency but also for its alignment with third-party benchmarks and long-term safety records.

Commenting on the achievement, Birla Carbon CEO John Loudermilk said the awards reflect a deeply embedded culture of safety: "These recognitions from the ICBA demonstrate a strong safety culture that our teams have established and maintained globally."
