ACE Laboratories and Abdallah Consulting have jointly launched VericarbSM, an independent certification programme for recovered carbon black (rCB). It verifies whether materials produced and marketed as rCB meet the programme’s defined criteria, combining independent material characterisation with rubber-performance data to help producers and prospective customers evaluate products.
Recovered carbon black is obtained through the pyrolysis of end-of-life tyres. For tyre manufacturers and rubber compounders considering its use, material specifications provide part of the information needed for qualification. Understanding how the material performs in a relevant rubber application helps buyers assess its suitability for their requirements.
The organisers say Vericarb connects these two areas, presenting independently verified material information alongside application-relevant performance results. For producers, the intended benefits include supporting product development, helping communicate performance to customers and enabling faster market entry.
For prospective users, the programme is designed to make unfamiliar materials easier to evaluate and support discussions about customer approval and quality-assurance requirements before supply begins.
“The rCB market has enormous potential, but growth has been held back by uncertainty about material quality and consistency,” said Erick Sharp, CEO of ACE Laboratories.
“VericarbSM gives producers a way to prove their product and gives buyers the independent data they need to say yes.”
The launch announcement does not detail the acceptance limits, certification scope or arrangements for ongoing verification.
Dave Abdallah, founder of Abdallah Consulting, said the way performance information is presented is an important part of that process.
“ASTM standards are critical; in fact, most testing done in the process follows ASTM methods. But customers relate to a product better when its performance is shown in applications relevant to them.”
