Continental Marks Milestone with Over One Million Automated Tyre Braking Tests

Continental has reached a significant milestone in tyre safety and performance testing, with its Automated Indoor Braking Analyzer (AIBA) facility completing over one million test trips. This state-of-the-art, fully automated tyre braking test facility, unique in its capabilities, underscores Continental's dedication to driving safety and environmental sustainability.

Groundbreaking Testing Facility

The AIBA, operational since 2012, stands out for its ability to precisely replicate test conditions, allowing for highly comparable results in evaluating new car and van tyres. Featuring an electromagnetic linear drive for acceleration and a lengthy braking track, the facility simulates real-world driving conditions on various road surfaces without the need for fuel.

Unmatched Precision and Sustainability

Meletis Xigakis, Head of Global Tyre Testing at Continental, highlighted the facility's modernity and efficiency, noting, "We can achieve a particularly high level of comparability of the test results in a fully air-conditioned, weather-independent, and fully automated environment." The AIBA's design significantly contributes to Continental's efforts in producing environmentally friendly tyres, with the facility running entirely on renewable energy since the end of 2020.

Since its commissioning in 2012, developers have tested more than 130,000 tires – including on the driverless Analytical Vehicle AIBA (AVA).

Extensive Testing for Optimal Performance

The AIBA plays a critical role in Continental's extensive testing regime, which includes evaluating over 130,000 tyres and conducting around two-thirds of all tyre braking tests. This rigorous testing process ensures the highest standards of tyre performance on dry, wet, snowy, and icy roads, contributing to the development of highly acclaimed tyres like the WinterContact TS 870.

Commitment to Sustainability and Efficiency

Continental's innovative approach extends beyond safety, with the AIBA facility saving significant resources over the past 12 years, including around 16,600 litres of fuel and nearly 40 tons of CO2. This achievement aligns with Continental's goal of achieving 100 percent carbon neutrality across its value chain by 2050.

A Leader in Tyre Safety and Innovation

With the AIBA facility, Continental reaffirms its leadership in tyre safety and innovation, blending cutting-edge technology with a strong commitment to sustainability. As the company continues to invest in new technologies and materials, its efforts in enhancing tyre performance and environmental friendliness set a benchmark for the industry.
