On the 4th of July 2024, Goodyear UK took to the field for the second year running in a charity football tournament, this time with a goal that transcends the sport itself.
The tournament aims to raise funds for Transaid, a charity dedicated to improving rural healthcare access and ensuring road safety for professional drivers in Africa. This event exemplifies how competitive sports can merge with altruistic goals, bringing communities together for a cause that can change lives.
Transaid, works relentlessly to address critical issues such as healthcare accessibility and road safety in Africa. The funds collected from the football tournament directly support Transaid’s vital programmes, which have made a considerable difference in various African countries.
Driving Safety Forward
A cornerstone of Transaid's mission is the Professional Driver Training programme, active in Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, with a recent expansion to Mozambique in 2021. This programme has been pivotal in enhancing road safety and boosting the confidence and competence of professional drivers. One inspiring story is that of Nahabwe Sharon Kinyatta, a female driver in Uganda, who represents the programme's dedication to gender inclusivity and professional growth.
Combatting Malaria and Beyond
Transaid’s innovative MAMaZ Against Malaria (MAM) at Scale programme is another significant initiative. This community-driven effort now operates in ten districts, reaching a million people and addressing both severe malaria and COVID-19 responses. It has become an essential support system for many communities.
Emergency Transport Schemes (ETS)
A critical part of the MAM at Scale programme is the Emergency Transport Schemes (ETS), which provide crucial links between rural communities and healthcare facilities. ETS riders, who volunteer their time, use bicycle ambulances to transport patients during medical emergencies, ensuring timely medical care.
