Delphi Releases First-To-Market EV Brakes

Headline: Rise in Electric Vehicle Sales Spurs Innovation in Brake System Maintenance

In the wake of the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), there's been a notable increase of 10.6 per cent in the sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) year-to-date, compared with the figures from 2023. This surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption highlights the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, particularly in terms of maintenance and repair of these environmentally friendly alternatives.

Carl Lester, the Global Product Line Manager at Delphi, underscores the significant potential that EV brakes present for workshops. He explains that electric vehicles predominantly utilise regenerative braking systems, which significantly reduce the wear on traditional hydraulic brakes. However, this diminished usage results in an increased accumulation of rust and contaminants on the brake disc's surface as well as on pad mounting and caliper components. This shift demands a new approach to brake system maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of EVs.
