Under Yokohama Rubber’s latest management plan, Yokohama Transformation 2023 (YX2023), the company has announced its newest product line, the HLC (high load capacity) tyres. This product has been developed to cater to the specific needs of electric vehicles (EVs) and large SUVs, which have surged in popularity.

The company has introduced HLC tyres as the original equipment (OE) for new cars and their repairs, with plans to develop products for the replacement market in response to market needs. One of the main issues addressed by Yokohama Rubber in developing HLC tyres is the challenge of maintaining high load capacity and performance for vehicles with high capacity batteries and large SUVs.

Conventional XL (extra load) standard tyres have difficulties in achieving such high load capacity and performance. To address this issue, Yokohama Rubber has established HLC tyres as a new tyre size in the passenger car tyre category of ETRTO standards. Compared to conventional XL tyres, HLC tyres have a higher load capacity. For instance, comparing the load capacities of 275/35R23 size tyres, conventional XL tyres weigh 900 kg (load index 104), while HLC tyres weigh 1,000 kg (load index 108). HLC tyres are indicated with "HL" at the beginning of their tyre size descriptions.

Comparison of heat generation and strain under load (left: standard tyre; right: HLC tyre) HLC tyres generate less heat and strain and have higher load durability. *To confirm the effects of dedicated profiles, simulations are done with larger loads than expected in actual use.

Advanced technology was required to ensure that the HLC tyres remain quiet and stable while maintaining their high load durability. Yokohama Rubber has developed a specific profile for the HLC tyres that balances load durability and other performance characteristics. This allows for less heat generation and strain under high loads compared to standard tyres.

Yokohama Rubber is proactively responding to the increasing number of EVs and large SUVs and is developing tyres that are tailored to their high load capacity and other vehicle characteristics. Under the Yokohama Transformation 2023 plan, the consumer tyre business is seeking to maximize the sales ratios of high-value-added YOKOHAMA tyres. The expansion of sales of ADVAN and GEOLANDAR tyres as original equipment on new cars is one of the key initiatives under this strategy.

The introduction of HLC tyres marks Yokohama Rubber’s technological advancement in ytechnology, providing superior performance and durability for heavy-duty passenger cars. This development is particularly beneficial for drivers who own or plan to purchase EVs and large SUVs.
