Managing Tyre Costs is Crucial for Fleet Efficiency, Warns FleetCheck

As running a fleet becomes increasingly expensive, tyre management is emerging as a major factor affecting the bottom line, according to FleetCheck. The fleet software specialist has revealed that tyres now account for over half of service, maintenance, and repair budgets for many fleets, and this figure is expected to increase further with the advent of electric vehicles (EVs).

Managing Director of FleetCheck, Peter Golding, explained that tyres are becoming such a significant part of SMR spending that many fleets are taking proactive measures to manage them, similar to the way they monitor fuel consumption. Factors such as driving style, cornering at high speeds, clipping kerbs, and driving through potholes can all have a significant impact on tyre wear, and as a result, more fleets are expected to track tyre usage and manage behaviour on the road.

FleetCheck is already working with some of its customers to create reports based on real-world data that will enable fleets to gain a better understanding of their tyre use and take appropriate action. This kind of information can also be used to identify which tyre brands offer the best wear performance and compare this to pricing.

Golding also noted that EVs are likely to increase tyre costs in the longer term due to their increased weight, which puts more pressure on the tyres. Although other SMR costs associated with EVs may be lower than internal combustion engine vehicles, tyre costs are likely to represent a higher proportion of overall spending.

As a result, FleetCheck believes that tyres are becoming the key focus for everyday running costs, and it expects more fleets to take proactive steps to manage them. By doing so, fleets can reduce their costs, improve safety, and increase the lifespan of their tyres, ensuring their vehicles are always roadworthy.
