Hankook will introduce iON, a family of tyres designed specifically for electric vehicles, in May 2022.

The new iON tyre development features even lower rolling resistance, significantly lower rolling-noise characteristics, and high resilience.

Compared to conventional tyres, this means more range per battery charge and a more enjoyable driving experience for electric car drivers. Furthermore, the new Hankook iON products are designed specifically for the instantaneous high torques generated by powerful electric vehicles.

At the market launch, the iON products will be available in three designs, in sizes ranging from 18 to 22 inches: in Europe beginning in May 2022 as the Hankook Ventus iON S summer tyre pattern, and in North America starting in September 2022 as the Hankook Winter i*cept iON winter tyre pattern. Sanghoon Lee, President of Hankook Tire Europe: "With the introduction of this new iON tyre family, our company is increasingly acknowledging the rapid growth in demand for electric vehicles and the associated need for suitable tyres, also in terms of the need for replacements. With an improved range per battery charge, this new generation of tyres will help to further optimise the efficiency of electric vehicles in everyday use."

According to IHS Markit forecasts, the global share of battery-powered electric automobiles in total vehicle sales will increase by 36.6 percent per year, from 6.4 percent today to 29.5 percent by 2028. Hankook iON tyres can significantly reduce CO2 emissions from road traffic because they allow for more kilometres per battery charge than standard tyres.

Thanks to a comprehensive set of technical measures, the new iON tyres meet the demanding everyday requirements for EV tyres (EV = Electric Vehicle). Hankook, in particular, has countered the higher vehicle mass of electric vehicles, which is caused by the significant weight of the drive batteries, with a higher load capacity. The tread compound, which contains a high proportion of natural resin, also provides exceptional durability and wear resistance. The new compound's high proportion of natural oils is another distinguishing feature. This not only makes the iON products more environmentally friendly overall, but it also improves tyre mileage.

Another goal for development was to create tyres that ran as quietly as possible. The Hankook sound absorberTM technology, combined with the specific pattern design integrated into the company's iON products, significantly reduces interior noise.

Klaus Krause, Head of the Hankook Tire Europe Technical Center in Hanover, Germany: "We are particularly proud that the new Hankook iON summer tyre, for example, has achieved an A/A/A rating on the EU tyre label. This corresponds to the highest performance in terms of rolling resistance, wet grip and tyre noise."
