Continental has emerged as the first tyre manufacturer to launch a volume production tyre that not only incorporates a substantial amount of sustainable materials but also delivers maximum performance in accordance with the EU tyre-label requirements. With all 19 available sizes carrying the highest possible rating ("A") on the EU tyre label for rolling resistance, wet braking, and exterior noise, the UltraContact NXT embodies Continental's commitment to sustainability without compromising on performance.

Ferdinand Hoyos, Head of Continental's Business Area Replacement Tires EMEA, emphasises the brand's dedication to safety, performance, and sustainability, stating, "At Continental, safety, performance, and sustainability go hand in hand. With the UltraContact NXT, we deliver on our ambitious sustainability goals. This development represents a significant leap forward and demonstrates our technological leadership as well as our strong commitment to both sustainability and safety. With its impressive performance, the UltraContact NXT pushes sustainability to the NXT level."

One of the key features of the UltraContact NXT is its impressive composition of renewable materials, accounting for up to 32 percent of the tyre's composition. Continental incorporates resins derived from residual materials of the paper and wood industries, which enable highly flexible compounds and improve grip. Moreover, the tyre contains silica derived from rice husks, an agricultural waste product. This innovative process not only provides a more sustainable alternative but also optimises characteristics such as grip, rolling resistance, and tyre life. Natural rubber, an essential material for tyre performance, remains a key component of the UltraContact NXT, ensuring elevated levels of strength and durability.

The UltraContact NXT proudly displays a special logo on its sidewall: "contains recycled materials." With up to five percent of the tyre comprising recycled rubber material, sourced from mechanically processed end-of-life tyres, Continental showcases its commitment to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. Additionally, recycled steel is employed in the production of the UltraContact NXT, further enhancing its sustainable credentials.

Continental's dedication to innovation and sustainability is evident in the adoption of the ContiRe.Tex technology, which reinforces the tyre carcass using high-performance polyester fibers derived from recycled PET bottles.

By incorporating this technology, Continental offers a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly alternative, saving PET bottles from incineration or landfills. Depending on the tyre size, between nine and fifteen plastic bottles are recycled for each UltraContact NXT tyre. These initiatives align with Continental's ambitious goal of achieving fully circular operations in tyre production by 2050.

To ensure the highest level of sustainability, Continental utilises up to 28 percent ISCC PLUS mass balance certified materials in the UltraContact NXT. This includes sustainable synthetic rubber and carbon black derived from biobased, bio-circular, and/or circular feedstock. Synthetic rubber plays a vital role in enhancing the performance characteristics of modern passenger car tyres, while carbon black optimises stability, strength, and durability. The ISCC PLUS certified balance mechanism guarantees transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain, certifying the origin and characteristics of the raw materials used.

Continental's tireless efforts towards greater sustainability extend throughout its entire value chain, from sourcing sustainable materials to recycling end-of-life tyres. By 2030, the company aims to incorporate over 40 percent renewable and recycled content in all newly produced tyres, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100 percent sustainable materials in all its tyre products by 2050 at the latest.

The UltraContact NXT is an extension of the highly successful UltraContact family, which was initially launched by Continental in 2022. With the UltraContact NXT, Continental aims to replace existing sizes and offer tyre options suitable for various car models of all drive types. The tyre has been designed to cater to both electric and combustion engines, providing exceptional label efficiency and optimum mileage performance. \Recognising the growing market for electric vehicles, Continental has adorned the UltraContact NXT with the EV Compatible logo, ensuring that it meets the specific requirements of popular electric vehicles such as the Kia Niro, VW ID.3, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Tesla Model 3, Audi Q4 E-TRON, Skoda Octavia, VW Golf 8, Audi A3, and many more.
