Get ‘Caught in the ACT’ this Tyre Safety Month: TyreSafe’s Campaign for Safer Roads

As the autumn weather sets in, road conditions become more hazardous, making tyre safety more critical than ever. In response, TyreSafe has launched its flagship 2024 Tyre Safety Month campaign, ‘Caught in the ACT.’ This initiative is aimed at improving road safety across the UK by encouraging motorists to prioritise tyre maintenance and avoid accidents related to illegal or poorly maintained tyres.

The ‘Caught in the ACT’ Campaign

Tyre Safety Month, held annually every October, is TyreSafe’s leading effort to raise awareness about the crucial role tyres play in road safety. This year’s campaign, built around the theme ‘Caught in the ACT,’ adopts a superhero-inspired approach, using a comic strip format to engage road users in a fun yet informative way. The aim is to empower drivers and riders to become ‘tyre safety heroes’ by performing regular tyre checks to reduce the risk of tyre-related accidents.

The campaign focuses on three essential tyre checks—Air Pressure, Condition, and Tread—which are summarised in the ACT acronym. By getting ‘Caught in the ACT’ once a month and before long journeys, motorists can help ensure their tyres are safe and roadworthy.

What Does ACT Stand For?

  • Air Pressure: Ensuring tyres are correctly inflated is key for optimal vehicle performance and fuel efficiency. Under- or over-inflated tyres can compromise safety and cost drivers more in fuel.
  • Condition: Regular inspections for cuts, bulges, or other damage help detect issues before they become dangerous. Tyres in poor condition are more likely to fail, especially in difficult driving conditions.
  • Tread: Maintaining proper tread depth ensures better grip and braking, especially on wet or icy roads. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, but safety experts recommend changing tyres when tread depth drops below 3mm.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, emphasises the importance of tyre checks, stating: “Tyre safety is not just a responsibility—it’s a lifesaving habit. By getting ‘Caught in the ACT.’ this October, drivers can become their own tyre safety heroes and contribute to safer roads across the UK. This campaign is a fun and engaging way to remind everyone of the critical role that tyres play in keeping us safe.”

Campaign Tools and How to Get Involved

TyreSafe has provided an array of campaign materials to help spread the message, including social media assets, animations, posters, and flyers that are available for download from TyreSafe’s website. Motorists are encouraged to share their tyre safety experiences using the hashtag #CaughtInTheACT, while garages and tyre centres can actively participate by offering free tyre checks and promoting the campaign in-store and online.

As winter approaches, the importance of tyre safety cannot be overstated. By adopting the ACT routine—Air Pressure, Condition, and Tread—drivers can make a super heroic commitment to keeping themselves, their passengers, and other road users safe.

Tyre Safety Month is a timely reminder for all road users to take tyre maintenance seriously. Join the movement, get ‘Caught in the ACT,’ and help contribute to safer roads across the UK this October and beyond.
